Planning a migration starts with understanding your options
A migration is an opportunity to review how your infrastructure supports the organisation. Assessing each workload before planning the move helps identify dependencies and avoid carrying unnecessary complexity into the target environment.
Compare the options
- Retain. Keep a workload where it is when that remains the right operational or commercial decision.
- Rehost. Move it to new infrastructure with limited application change.
- Modernise. Consider a different platform or application design where there is a clear benefit.
- Retire. Remove systems that are no longer needed, after checking their dependencies and retention requirements.
Build a realistic delivery plan
Document the target environment, connectivity, identity, data movement and support arrangements. Include testing, cutover and recovery planning, along with the people needed at each stage.
A migration planning review brings those choices together in an options appraisal and phased roadmap. It gives technical teams and business sponsors a shared basis for deciding how to proceed.
